I think I deserve an A b/c I did most of the work in partner projects and i got a lot of it completed. I also went above and beyond and did things with the blogs at home. I mean Geo did ok but i was holding the two of us together. I helped our grade the most so i deserve the better grade.

From the Rwanda unit, I learned...

- Rwanda is in the middle of Africa
- Capitol of Rwanda is Kigali
- There was a large genocide in 1994
- Over 1,000,000 people died in the genocide
- Tutsi's were supposedly a higher class than Hutus
- Hutu rebels started the genocide
- All non-Rwandans fled the country
- The rest of the world stood back and watched it happen
- They measured noses to see who was worthy of learning
- When being taught english, they learned the southern version
- The genocide was not the first war between the Tutsi's and Hutus
- there are two rainy seasons
- There is a volcano called Virunga
- population is predominantly rural
- 7,954,013 people live in Rwanda today
- the median age is 18 years
- the cockroaches are GIANT
- when people cut down trees they'll get stuck between a lion, an alligator, and a snake
- there is a third nationality called Twa that is 1% of the population
- Rwanda is the most densly populated in Africa
- They became independant on July 1, 1962
- The earthworms are like skinny snakes
- Derek brought his friend from Rwanda back to texas.
- Ibuka is the coordinator for genocide survivors
- Kenya is Rwanda's leading import partner

1.) Poem was well written and funny in a way, it made us giggle. *snicker, snicker*
I liked the part when he shouted howdy and they repeated him.

2.) It's kind of a weird poem. Geo thinks the "hoe" part was funny. He has a dirty mind.

3.) Reminder of Pinoccio. Noses grow and noses are too short and all in all, the whole concept is kind of gross. When i think of noses, i think of boogers and snot and mucus and nasty stuff like that. YUCK!!!

The typical person with Asperger's Syndrome is a 'loner' who never quite fits in because of eccentric behaviour, peculiar ways of speaking and a lack of social skills. He or she may be interested in social relationships but lacks the ability to understand and use the rules governing social behaviour. He or she may try to make contact inappropriately, e.g. ignoring contextual cues or expressing inadequacy aggressively. People with Asperger's Syndrome may graduate from regular schools and hold down jobs, but they are often disadvantaged by their odd behaviour and resistance to change. They have difficulty establishing relationships and children often refuse to return to their homes to play with them. Older children may over time withdraw from the uncomfortable interactions which characterized their early years and retreat into the safety of their family or even isolate themselves from their family. They may feel rejected but do not understand how their behavioural responses contributed to their isolation. (from first link)

In 1959, three years before independence from Belgium, the majority ethnic group, the Hutus, overthrew the ruling Tutsi king. Over the next several years, thousands of Tutsis were killed, and some 150,000 driven into exile in neighboring countries. The children of these exiles later formed a rebel group, the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF), and began a civil war in 1990. The war, along with several political and economic upheavals, exacerbated ethnic tensions, culminating in April 1994 in the genocide of roughly 800,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus. The Tutsi rebels defeated the Hutu regime and ended the killing in July 1994, but approximately 2 million Hutu refugees - many fearing Tutsi retribution - fled to neighboring Burundi, Tanzania, Uganda, and the former Zaire. Since then, most of the refugees have returned to Rwanda, but about 10,000 that remain in the neighboring Democratic Republic of the Congo have formed an extremist insurgency bent on retaking Rwanda, much as the RPF tried in 1990. Despite substantial international assistance and political reforms - including Rwanda's first local elections in March 1999 and its first post-genocide presidential and legislative elections in August and September 2003, respectively - the country continues to struggle to boost investment and agricultural output, and ethnic reconciliation is complicated by the real and perceived Tutsi political dominance. Kigali's increasing centralization and intolerance of dissent, the nagging Hutu extremist insurgency across the border, and Rwandan involvement in two wars in recent years in the neighboring Democratic Republic of the Congo continue to hinder Rwanda's efforts to escape its bloody legacy. The country of Rwanda experienced a horrible genocide about ten years ago that was as tremendous as the epic of the jews in World War 2. It is located in central Africa near the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The genocide took the lives of 800,000 people and today, the children of Rwanda are still suffering the consequences of the atrocities. At the end of the genocide (1994), there were 95,000 children left orphaned. Rwanda is now the a country that is primarily run by children in each house. Today, it is said that french soldiers may have had a role in the 1994 genocide. The survivers of the genocide are offered 4.25 million pounds, the largest ever grant rewarded. Not long ago this year, Rwandan rebels emerged from the congo forests to terrorize citizens. In an attempt to put the gonocide behind them, their department of tourism begins to build on it's gorilla tour reputation. The U.S. government pleads $50 million for rebuilding of Rwanda. Maybe there is hope for restoration in their nearly destroyed country. (from one of the websites)
